Johnathan Hankins is exploring the free agent market for a better offer than the one he received from the New York Giants. New York is growing impatient.

The New York Giants have invested heavily during the 2017 NFL offseason. New York notably re-signed John Jerry and Jason Pierre-Paul, and signed D.J. Fluker and Brandon Marshall in attempts to both solidify the offense and secure the defense’s future.

For as active as the Giants have been, there’s a cloud hanging over the organization that’s taken form from the uncertainty pertaining to the future of one Johnathan Hankins.

After four years with the Giants, Hankins is currently perusing the free agency market. New York has delivered a standing offer, but the 24-year-old is attempting to receive a bigger contract from a different team.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Giants are growing impatient and want an answer from Hankins about his intentions in free agency.

In other words: Hankins wants more money than New York has offered, but no team is willing to pay him the desired amount.

Hankins was selected by the Giants at No. 49 overall in the 2013 NFL Draft. The former Ohio State Buckeyes star began his career with a bang and has since returned from a 2015 pectoral injury in intriguing form.

The hope in New York appears to be that the Giants can keep the entire defensive line together after the success it experienced in 2016.

Perhaps more applicably, the hope appears to be that the Giants can get the Hankins of 2014 back for the 2017 season.

Hankins was regarded as a run stuffer coming out of college, but in his second NFL season, he recorded 7.0 sacks. His injury took the second half of the 2015 season from him and created some rust early in 2016.

With his 25th birthday looming, however, Hankins has youth on his side and remaining upside that New York is hoping to explore.
