Wow, I can’t believe preseason is tomorrow. I guess that’s what a blissful summer with your team on top of the heap will do to you. A full scouting report for tomorrow is coming later today, but for now here’s the news:
Lawrence Tynes is a nerd. Paul Schwartz has a piece in the NY Post about how Tynes is trying to make sure his game-winning field goal in Green Bay is not the defining moment of his career. In my book, a kick like that isn’t a bad way to be remembered. What’s most interesting about this article, to me, is how much of a stereotypically nerdy kicker Tynes comes off as:
"“I just got [David Tyree] to sign, so I’m one of those people,” Tynes said yesterday. “I think what’s happened to him has been unbelievable. I was one of those guys, I got my recent [Sports Illustrated that features Tyree on the cover] signed by him. I’m going to put it up in my basement.”"
Really Lawrence, your basement? Once again proving that kickers are a different breed of football players.
Was the other day’s light yog, a forbearer of good things? According to the NY Daily News it is. Ralph Vacchiano reports Drew Rosenhaus may be closing in on an extension for star receiver, Plaxico Burress:
"“I’m sure we’ll spend the night talking with the Giants and into (today),” Rosenhaus said. “This is the third time we’ve been up here. We’re certainly working as hard as we can to get this done.”"
"Burress, who has three years and $10.5million left on his deal, is seeking to be paid $8 million-$9 million per season."
A pretty reasonable contract request considering Plaxico’s body of work if you ask me.
Maybe we spoke too soon however. The NJ Star Ledger’s reporter, Mike Garafolo is reporting that while there are talks going on, nothing seems to be on the horizon:
"“Still working,” Drew Rosenhaus wrote in an e-mail minutes ago. “Nothing imminent.”"
Well, that sure was a waste of excitement. The fact that they are talking is good though, and I expect them to reach an agreement before the end of the preseason.
The Mike Garafolo is also reporting in the NJ Star Ledger that Danny Clark may be the main man for the Giants at the weakside linebacker:
"With third-year linebacker Gerris Wilkinson on the way back from a knee injury and rookie Bryan Kehl making a somewhat surprising push for immediate playing time, Clark could build a nice lead in the competition for the starting spot with a good performance against the Lions in the preseason opener."
My vote is still for Wilkinson, who has been very good when he’s been healthy. I guess this is just another thing to watch in tomrorow’s preseason game.
