The following are some key roster battles to think about during mini camp/training camp…..
—————————
3rd Quarterback: Andre’ Wooson/Rhett Bomar
- Last years 6th round pick (Andre Woodson) and last months 5th round pick (Rhett Bomar) make for an interesting position battle to watch this summer. Both have all the tools/frame/attributes to be successful. The loser figures to be placed on the practice squad if he is not picked up of waivers
- Winner: Rhett Bomar – Bomar has tons of upside and the Giants see that. He makes the team and is groomed to be the number two once David Carr leaves.
6th Wide Receiver: Sinorice Moss/David Tyree/Derrick Hagan
- Steve Smith, Domenik Hixon, Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks, and Ramses Barden are all locks to make the roster. Leaving Sinorice Moss, David Tyree, and Derrick Hagan to fight it out for the 6th (possibly 7th) roster spot at WR.
- Winner: Sinorice Moss – Moss has tons of ability but he has yet to produce on a consistent basis. This is his last chance to show the Giants he deserves to stick. He’s currently penciled in as the 3rd wideout by Gilbride. We’ll see how long that sticks.
5th Defensive End: Dave Tollefson/Robert Henderson/Maurice Evans
- All Pros Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck are locks as well as Mathias Kiwanuka and Chris Canty. Leaving Dave Tollefson, Robert Henderson, and Maurice Evans as the front runners to be the 5th DE.
- Winner: Maurice Evans – He had a monster sophomore season at Penn St. racking up over 12 sacks and 20 tackles for a loss. His suspension during the beginning of the 08 season caused him to lose his starting job to 2009 top 15 pick Aaron Maybin.
5th Cornerback: DeAndre Wright/Stoney Woodson/Bruce Johnson
- Corey Webster, Aaron Ross, Terrell Thomas and Kevin Dockery are the locks here. The top prospects for thr 5th CB spot look to rookies DeAndre Wright, Stoney Woodson, and Bruce Johnson
- Winner: DeAndre Wright – The rookie has some upside and has flashed some skill at mini camp. I could also see Bruce Johnson (UDFA – UMiami) being the guy as well.
Punt Returner: Domenik Hixon/Sinorice Moss/Mario Manningham
- Winner: Domenik Hixon – The best return man on the team. Only way he loses his job is if he starts at wide receiver or the Giants sign someone new.
Kick Returner: Domenik Hixon/Sinorice Moss/ Ahmad Bradshaw/Danny Ware/Hakeem Nicks
- Winner: Ahmad Bradshaw – Does a solid job on kick returns, Ahmad looks to be the number one option to return kicks in 2009
