Giants undefeated in ’09!

I was very pleased with Monday’s 24-17 win over the Panthers for many reasons. First, the running game looked phenomenal.  Jacobs was on his game, Bradshaw was nice and Danny Ware made a name for himself. Ware’s 36-yard catch-and-run TD at the end of the first half was a thing of beauty. He looked like Tiki in his prime, you know, without the back-stabbing, pretentiousness and undeserved sense of entitlement.

Also, Mario Manningham could be the new deep threat. He looked good on that first punt return, and it seems he’s got some speed. Granted, Manningham is no Plax on the field but he can’t be much dumber off it. It’d be kind of ironic if he winds up taking Burress’ place, because Manningham came from The Big House at Michigan and Plax is heading to The Big House upstate.

Plus, with David Carr playing like he did Monday who needs Eli? Just kidding. But Carr did look good. That scramble he had showed me something and his 6-for-10 effort was nothing to scoff at. I still miss the Pillsbury Throwboy (Jared Lorenzen) but Carr is a solid backup if — God forbid — something happens to Eli.

Another plus I noticed was that the defense was stellar. Yeah, they were facing Carolina’s  back-up scrubs most of the game but the Big Blue Wrecking Crew caused five turnovers, the last one to win the game. I’ll take that any day. Furthermore, the secondary was playing well and it was a good game on that side of the ball for the most part.

One thing that made me angry on Monday was the lack of the pass. The offense better not rely solely on the run. I know it’s been their bread and butter, and I know it’s still early in the preseason, and I know the starters only played a little, but air the GD ball out once in a while. Throw some flea flickers in there, a Hail Mary, anything! Just throw the ball a little more. Maybe this is why I’m not a coach, but why not throw in some trick plays early in the preseason? Iron out all the kinks and what-not when the games don’t count. Get that stuff down to a T so you can run it during the season.

Next up: the Bears. Saturday, August 22.
