Wednesday Practice Report

The Giants are having a “corrections” walk-through practice. QB Eli Manning is wearing a hat over his 12 stitches instead of his helmet. Manning’s head was left bleeding after he collided with RB Brandon Jacobs in Monday’s preseason opener.

CB Corey Webster (glute), WR Steve Smith (groin), WR Sinorice Moss (groin) and TE Kevin Boss (hamstring, ankle) have all returned to practice. QB Eli Manning (stitches), QB Jim Sorgi (shoulder, ribs), WR Ramses Barden (back), OG Chris Snee (knee), TE Jake Ballard (hamstring) and OG Kevin Boothe (pectoral) aren’t working.

QB Eli Manning hasn’t had any headaches since his collision Monday night. Manning said he will return as soon as he can wear a helmet without disturbing the cut on his forehead. He does not expect to practice Wednesday, and his status for Saturday is unclear.

Coach Tom Coughlin said QB Eli Manning (head) “would not play this week,” against Pittsburgh. However, Manning’s possible return to practice before Saturday’s game hasn’t been ruled out. “There is a question about what he can do with a hat on rather than a helmet,” Coughlin said.

Rhett Bomar might be the only QB available for the Wednesday afternoon practice. Jim Sorgi is waiting to get the word from team trainers on his sore shoulder and ribs, and Eli Manning said he might do some one-on-one throwing drills without wearing a helmet.

P Matt Dodge believes he has pinpointed the cause of his poor performance in Monday’s preseason game against the Jets. “Probably more my steps,” Dodge said. “My drop wasn’t too bad, but the steps kind of throw off everything.”

Former Giants punter Jeff Feagles saw some progress from rookie P Matt Dodge on Monday night. “His holding has gotten a lot better,” Feagles said. “He definitely has the talent.” Feagles added that the blocked punt was not Dodge’s fault.

LB Chase Blackburn says his injured right MCL feels better and he hopes to return for the team’s final preseason game.
TE Kevin Boss (hamstring, ankle) said he will be practicing Wednesday afternoon.
Coach Tom Coughlin said OG Chris Snee felt better Wednesday. Snee, who has had a swollen left knee, did not play Monday against the Jets.

Unofficially, P Matt Dodge averaged 3.74 seconds of hangtime over eight attempts. While he had a few errant punts, one attempt traveled 54 yards and hung in the air for 4.44 seconds.

CB Terrell Thomas has been defending the slot in multiple-receiver sets. Both he and CB Aaron Ross saw time at nickel back during Monday’s preseason game.
LB Phillip Dillard just took some snaps at strongside linebacker with the first-team defense while LB Clint Sintim sat. Dillard usually plays in the middle with the second-team defense.

LB Chase Blackburn (knee) and S Michael Johnson (back) are also not practicing. Meanwhile, QB Eli Manning (head) has been throwing passes without wearing his helmet.
WR Ramses Barden said his injury is to his lower back and it’s something he had going into Monday’s game against the Jets.

WR Sinorice Moss (groin) said WR Victor Cruz’s performance on Monday did not put more pressure on him to return from injury, but he went on to say that he will practice Wednesday afternoon. Moss seemed very happy for Cruz, who had three TD catches.
