Thursday Practice Report

The Giants are doing another walk-through practice. Once again, QB Eli Manning (stitches in his head) is not wearing a helmet.
QB Rhett Bomar hasn’t played an entire game since his college days but says he’s excited to do so Saturday against Pittsburgh. Bomar said he will, “play within the confines of the offense,” as opposed to emulating starting QB Eli Manning (head injury).

The Giants waived TE Jake Ballard to create room to sign QB Dominic Randolph. QB Jim Sorgi (shoulder) will be out 2-3 weeks, Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger is reporting.

Coach Tom Coughlin said S Kenny Phillips (knee) and LB Keith Bulluck will see time in Saturday’s game against the Steelers.

Coach Tom Coughlin said QB Jim Sorgi did suffer some damage to his throwing shoulder. Coughlin said Sorgi needs rest and rehab, but the team isn’t ready to look for another quarterback until they learn more from team doctors.

Coach Tom Coughlin said OG Chris Snee (knee) should return next week, but WR Ramses Barden (back) could be “awhile.” He refused to expand on that answer.

QB Rhett Bomar has been quick and accurate running the two-minute drill. All of his passes were catchable and put receivers in a position to get out of bounds. His only mistakes were two errant throws that soared out of the end zone.

In his first practice since rookie minicamp, QB Dominic Randolph just threaded the defense with a TD pass to WR Tim Brown.

QB Eli Manning (head) and QB Jim Sorgi (shoulder) are present. Manning has thrown a few passes in a baseball hat, but Sorgi doesn’t appear to be working.

K Lawrence Tynes made an impressive kick from 52 yards away.

P Matt Dodge’s search for consistency continues. He had a few errant punts, but did soar one for an unofficial 4.46 seconds.

WR Ramses Barden (back), LB Chase Blackburn (knee), OG Chris Snee (knee), S Michael Johnson (back) and OG Kevin Boothe (pectoral) aren’t practicing.

Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell says one difference in his defense is that “we try to cater to the technique of the defensive linemen to complement the linebacker who is playing behind them.” He also said strong side linebackers don’t necessarily line up over the tight end.

Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell was impressed with rookie DT Linval Joseph in Saturday’s game. “I thought Joseph was strong inside,” Fewell said. “He was sometimes dominant. He wasn’t as consistent as we’d like to see, but he did show me some flashes.”

Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said LT Will Beatty played well with LT David Diehl at left guard in Saturday’s game but added that OG Rich Seubert is also still a candidate for the starting LT position. Gilbride has said that the best five players will start along the offensive line.

Should QB Rhett Bomar sustain injury Saturday, offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said CB Antrel Rolle would step in. Rolle often boasts about his arm strength. Gilbride said QB Dominic Randolph could see some action in the fourth quarter.

WR Victor Cruz earned at least one famous fan with his three-touchdown performance Monday against the Jets. “I heard LeBron James tweeted about me, so that’s definitely one of the highlights of my life,” Cruz said.

Saturday’s game will mark the first preseason meeting between the Steelers and Giants since 1993. Steelers RapidReports

QB Dominic Randolph said he was traveling from Richmond to Nantucket when he got the call to join the Giants in Albany. The Holy Cross product caught a connecting flight. He described his presence at camp as a “great opportunity.”

LB Phillip Dillard said he enjoyed playing on the strong side in practice and would not mind ending up there. “All the linebackers get to hit someone,” he said. A rookie, Dillard has experience in coverage because so many college teams have adopted the spread offense.
