Monday Practice Report & Notes

Giants not practicing Monday:

RT Kareem McKenzie (migraines), CB Aaron Ross (plantar fasciitis), and C Shaun O’Hara (Achilles). Players who returned to practice include WR Ramses Barden (back), S Michael Johnson (back), DE Jason Pierre-Paul (groin), and DT Chris Canty (groin).

QB Jim Sorgi (shoulder) will not practice Monday and isn’t likely to do so this week.

“I’m happy the team has been this patient with me. Hopefully they’ll be more patient and wait until I get better.”

RT Kareem McKenzie missed practice because of another migraine. OT Will Beatty started on the right side in 11-on-11 drills after handling the position for McKenzie in Saturday’s preseason game in Baltimore.

The Giants declined to provide injury updates regarding CB Aaron Ross (plantar fasciitis), LB Adrian Tracy (elbow), WR Sinorice Moss (groin), LB Gerris Wilkinson (groin) or QB Jim Sorgi (shoulder). Sorgi will not practice Tuesday, and Moss is in Philadelphia getting a second opinion.

• QB Rhett Bomar could rise up the depth chart if Jim Sorgi’s shoulder doesn’t get better. “I don’t know if their patience is wearing thin,” Sorgi said of the coaches. “I’m sure it is. Just the numbers game, it’s getting to be that point.” Final cuts must be made by Saturday.

• QB Jim Sorgi said his shoulder has improved slightly and “there’s always hope” of practicing this week. The final preseason game Thursday could be his last chance to prove himself. “There really is no following week,” Sorgi said. “It all depends on what the team wants to do.”

• The Giants surrendered 313 passing yards to Baltimore on Saturday. “It was just, some guys not doing what the D-coordinator taught us,” S Deon Grant said. He said the problems were not evident in practice prior to the game. “That’s why it was so disappointing.”

• WR Mark Clayton said he’s suffering neck pains as a result of being hit by Giants S Antrel Rolle, who called him to apologize for the illegal hit.

• QB Eli Manning (forehead laceration) did not have any mishaps with his reconfigured helmet Saturday. “Physically, everything was fine,” he said. “Everything was where it needs to be.” His helmet was modified to accommodate his recently-removed stitches. It also fastened higher up toward the temple.

• LB Phillip Dillard said he doesn’t know if the middle linebacker job is still an open competition, but he is trying to improve nonetheless. “I could get to my drops a little faster,” he said, “read passes a little better, but I’ve gotten better at that.”

• P Matt Dodge was happy with Saturday’s performance. “The thing I liked was my mis-hits were still effective,” Dodge said. “Before, they might have been 30 yards out of bounds.” He’s still learning end-over-end punts but hopes to utilize that technique in short-field situations.

• LB Chase Blackburn (knee) has returned to the practice field for the first time since injuring his MCL. LB Gerris Wilkinson (groin) was out at practice, but has since gone inside. It is unclear if he re-aggravated his injury.

• C Adam Koets, S Kenny Phillips and LB Keith Bulluck all started with the first-team in 11-on-11 drills. LB Clint Sintim subbed in for Bulluck on the strong side after just a few plays. The two are battling for the starting job.

• OG Rich Seubert began 11-on-11 drills at his customary position next to LT David Diehl on the left side. Diehl had played guard whenever Seubert would slid over to center. OG Chris Snee is not practicing Monday. He has had problems with swelling in his right knee this preseason.

• RB D.J. Ware has returned from his concussion and is taking snaps at Monday’s practice. With RB Andre Brown’s improvement the last few weeks, Ware is no higher than fourth on the depth chart.

• OG Chris Snee was not absent from practice because of his knee. “His family may be having a baby, I hope, right now,” coach Tom Coughlin said. Coughlin is Snee’s father-in-law and the grandfather to Snee’s child. This is Coughlin’s 10th grandchild.

• Coach Tom Coughlin was happy with P Matt Dodge’s performance Saturday, but he wasn’t pleased with the special teams as a unit. “Not tackling well enough,” Coughlin said. “Got to tackle better.” Specials teams play will be considered when the Giants make five cuts tomorrow.
