Backup QB Rhett Bomar Interview

Q: How’s it been out there so far?
A: I’ve been comfortable, that’s been my goal the whole time. I can only control what I can control. It’s the coaches’ decision, and everything like that. I just try to go out there and play to the best of my ability, and hopefully everything works out. It’s an opportunity I have to go out there Thursday and show them that I’m capable to do that and they can trust me. That’s my goal to do that.

Q: What makes you think this job is yours to win or lose?
A: I’ve always been confident in myself. I feel comfortable in the offense and I just need to cut down on some mistakes and things like that. Like I said, I can’t control everything. I can only control how I play, and that’s it. Hopefully they’re comfortable enough with me.

Q: So a good performance out of you Thursday and maybe you’re the guy:
A: Yes. I mean you never want anybody to get hurt. Jim’s a great guy. He’s been a great help to me and I like him a lot. It’s an unfortunate situation, but it’s also an opportunity for me to try to solidify that spot, and that’s my goal. I want to be the backup on this team, and help the team out anyway I can.

Q: Tom has spoken of the progress you’ve made, because of those extra reps. Where are you now compared to that first day you saw all that work in practice?
A: I feel way more comfortable since camp started. I never would’ve thought I would get a whole week of practice, a whole game in the preseason. I didn’t think that’d happen this year. I’m glad I did, for me, not the whole situation. I feel a lot more comfortable. I just have to tune up a few things and cut down on some mistakes and go out there and make plays.

Q: Anything in particular where you need to feel more comfortable?
A: Nothing specific. Just have to work on everything and be perfect, and have the coaches be confident in my ability.

Q: Are the next few days going to be a scary time for you?
A: It’s not scary. I’m not worried about them, to be honest. Like I said a million times, I can only control what I can control. My job is to go out there on Thursday and play to the best of my ability and lead this team whenever I get my opportunity and let the chips fall as they may.

Q: How long are you going to play Thursday?A: I don’t know. It’s the last game so the starters will get some. Coach Coughlin knows a certain amount of reps that they’ll get, and then we’ll go in. Hopefully, it’ll be a solid amount of time to go out there and play some ball.
