The Enemy’s Words: Giants Took Away Everything We Tried To Do

"Facing the Giants, owners of the NFL’s best pass rush and ranked third in total defense, was certain to be difficult. But hadn’t they conquered such challenges? Who had stifled the Texans? Who had made them one-dimensional?No one, until the Giants on Sunday at Reliant Stadium.“We never got anything going with anything,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “I don’t know if we had enough carries to evaluate anything. Then we’re down 24-3, and we’re trying to do something to get back into the football game. That’s me being aggressive as a playmaker caller. I was losing my patience and trying to spark my team. We never really ever got anything going running the ball.”The Texans followed a simple formula in becoming a formidable offense – gaining positive yards on first down. But the Giants, as Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears realized last week, can rush the quarterback as well, if not better, than anyone. Matt Schaub was sacked three times, but the Giants were just as disruptive on early and non-obvious passing downs.“The way we lost this game was tough,” Caldwell said. “They did take a lot of things away from us. In our other loss, we still ran the ball effectively, and we had a couple of big plays. This game, they completely took away everything we wanted to do.”Added left guard Wade Smith: “It plays into their hands. They have great pass rushers on their team, and it’s third-and-long. It’s tough to get things done.”"
