"Depending on which stats service you use, the Giants are either No. 1 or No. 2 in total defense. Without veteran DE Mathias Kiwanuka, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck have stepped up their game in a big way. Umenyiora has shown some serious resilience the past few weeks with multiple sacks and forced fumbles each week. Osi has nine himself and he’s helped the Giants lead the league in total forced fumbles with 13. The Giants are also tied for second in the NFL with 21 sacks. The unsung heroes perhaps of this defense are Barry Cofield, Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty. That crucial central push to the defensive front has been critical to re-establishing outside pressure oppotunites for Tuck, Umenyiora and rookie Jason Pierre-Paul. Not only is it important in collapsing the QB’s pocket so they can’t step up, but the gap pressure has been fantastic for shutting down the run game and making teams one dimensional. Just listen to what Tom Coughlin said of Fewell and his defense’s effort recently:“Well, we got in good position. We had good speed on the edge. We gave some multiple looks. We got some good one on one … we had success in our one on one matchups tonight. We came from different spots – from both outsides, we came up the middle – and we were able to consistently put pressure on the quarterback.”That is talk of just complete and utter domination defensively. Between allowing zero TD’s and zero first downs against the top ranked offenses of the Bears and Texans respectively, and knocking out three different quarterbacks with a relentless pass rush, I’d say the defense is definitely back in business for the Giants."
