Giants Defense by the Numbers

One of our good friends at ESPN is recognizing the exceptional season the Giants’ defense is having and is making a comparison by the numbers of this year’s unit and that of the infamous 2007 Super Bowl champions. Check out the numbers they have unearthed:

Hard to believe, but if this year’s defense could compete against the 2007 team, then statistically speaking the 2010 team would dominate that game. Add this impressive defense to an offense that has used second- and third-string players to create a strong running game while keeping their quarterback clean for five straight weeks, and we have ourselves champions in the making. And the best part? Some of the starters are coming back soon, with Dave Diehl, Hakeem Nicks and Steve Smith practicing this week. Barring further injuries, the 2010 Giants have all the pieces in place, they just need to live up to this potential and keep their heads in the game. Even the experts are starting to recognize this team.

What I find surprising is that the Giants are not getting more attention as Super Bowl favorites at this point in the season, but then again I have always maintained that the Giants perform best as the underdog. So let’s keep this information to ourselves for now!
