Boley’s Injury Could Mean Herzlich Starts

There aren’t usually too many bright spots to talk about when a starting player is lost to injury. We all know how hard the injury bug has bitten the Giants this season but if there’s something good to come out of the potential loss of LB Michael Boley for this Sunday’s clash against the Eagles is that it’s opened up the door for Mark Herzlich.

A report on NFL.com speculates that if Boley, who’s doubtful due to a hamstring injury for Sunday’s game, isn’t able to go that Herzlich will be replacing him for his first start this season. If this is true and does happen then it’s one of the most inspiring stories of the year. Of course, things have already been pretty inspiring when it comes to Herzlich this season and ever since he has returned to the football field after his battle against cancer.

The 24-year old undrafted Boston College cancer survivor is in line for his career NFL start on defense and has only seen time on the field in special teams duties but the coaches believe in him.

If Herzlich is to start over the other rookie linebackers Greg Jones, Spencer Paysinger and Jacquian Williams Coach Coughlin said it’s because he earned it:

"We already experienced the fact that he communicates well. He seems to know the defense and he can get us lined up."

I, for one, can not wait to see Herzlich’s first start on defense. Hopefully it will be one of many more to come in a long career as a New York Giant.
