Off with the head! Wait, wait, wait. GM Jerry Reese is actually doing a good job in free agency thus far. Yes, you haven’t seen any of the big name signings that you dream of, but those big signings are for teams that are one piece away. The Giants are a team that is lacking in talent as of right now, and Reese is doing his best to add quality players for depth.
He retained the in-house talent that he thought was worth the value. While letting Tuck leave, he did re-sign three time pro-bowler LB Jon Beason. He has also signed some very underrated players with big potential in Rashad Jennings and Quintin Demps.
Jennings came from Oakland where he shined as a back-up to the oft injured Darren McFadden. He rushed for over 700 yards and is a jack-of-all-trades of sorts that can be valuable for any offense. Expect him to come in and compete for the #1 running back spot right from training camp.
Quitin Demps is also a player who may not be know to the average fan, but had a very solid year for the Kansas City Chiefs. While he was inconsistent at previous stints with the Eagles and Texans, he shined as a role player in 2013 notching his best season. In just six starts, he accumulated 35 tackles, nine passes defended and four interceptions. He can also provide much help to special teams where he averaged just over 30 yards per kickoff return last year for the Chiefs.
The Giants still have a dash over $11 million to spend in free agency, so expect them to sign a few more quality players. Here is a list of the signings thus far per spotrac.com:
