Beason Replacements: LB’s on the 2014 NY Giants Roster

Mark Herzlich: The cancer survivor and fan favorite had so much promise prior to his diagnosis, but his return was exceptional along with how he has maintained his roster spot as a backup linebacker and special teams standout. Herzlich is a motivated, hardworking professional that has an inspiring story. Loaded with intangibles, he also possesses the experience that may be necessary to replace Beason, as he has been playing at MIKE linebacker since he joined the NFL and the Giants three years ago.
Herzlich’s biggest issue is his physical traits, as his battle with cancer took away much of his pure athleticism and ability. Nevertheless, playing with a metal rod in his leg, Mark has shown augmentation in his ability each year since defeating Ewing’s sarcoma. With three years in the same defensive scheme and another year away from his battle, Herzlich could make the jump…but can he play three downs as a balanced run and pass defender? He has not shown that ability just yet.
