Quintin Demps: Giants Safety

Last season, Quintin Demps was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. You remember that game right, Giants Nation? It was the one where Eli Manning threw an interception…

Not specific enough? Okay. It was the one were Eli Manning was under no pressure at all and still through a pick… okay, that’s not enough info either. Here, just watch for yourself:

That particular Demps GIF was used in our “Know Your Giants” series during the offseason featuring Q — and really — not much has changed in the assessment since. Here’s a reminder:

"His football game contains speed, at almost 29 years old, Quintin can still fly. The Giants need speed, in the return game, Demps will have competition. Players like first round pick Odell Beckham Jr. are an option for the Giants on special teams, as is Trindon Holliday. The former super speedster for the Denver Broncos. That’s not even mentioning in house guys like Mike Cox or Rueben Randle. The New York Giants have some options.“WITH THE BALL IN HIS HANDS, QUINTIN DEMPS IS A WEAPON.” -“WILLIAM WATTS”Quintin Demps safety options were limited until Will Hill was suspended by the NFL for six games. Now, it appears Demps will have a legitimate opportunity to expand upon his role with the team. Now… know this, Giants fans. Quintin Demps is not the perfect replacement, he knows he has work to do. Quintin Demps can’t be completely oblivious to the fact that he was on the Kansas City Chiefs defense last season. You know the Chiefs defense, the one that blew one of the biggest leads in playoff history to Andrew Luck and the Colts."

With the injury bug blowing through Giants camp, effecting guys like Odell Beckham and Trindon Holliday with hamstrings, naturally players like Quintin Demps will get more opportunities. However, Mr. Demps isn’t alone in his quest to make an impact. Art Stapleton suggests that Marcus Harris will get shots with Q to increase his standing for making the final”53″:

Now, does this suggest that Quintin Demps roster spot is on shaky ground? Nope. It simply says the Giants are interested in giving Harris every chance to make the roster after a strong showing in game one against Buffalo. For Q. Demps, he didn’t get an opportunity to show what he can do against Buffalo as the Giants didn’t return any kicks. However, he did play 23 snaps at safety and recorded a pass defensed and a missed tackle.

Quintin Demps has been on a lot of teams, but his strength is in the return game. If Quintin Demps can earn the Giants trust as safety depth…  great. But most importantly, look for Demps to win the kick-off return spot; despite the on-the-job training for receiver Marcus Harris.

This year on kick-offs for the G-Men, the weapon is simply known as Q.
