2015 NFL Draft Profile: LB Paul Dawson, TCU

facebooktwitterreddit

The Giants need a dominant middle linebacker and Paul Dawson could fill that need if selected in the 2015 NFL Draft. Dawson is perfect for the Giants 4-3 defense, with sideline to sideline speed and the headhunter like mindset of a true middle linebacker.

Dawson plays fast When he makes a mistake he does it full speed. He doesn’t make many mistakes however, his football IQ is not in question. He has the athletic ability to stay on the field on 3rd downs. He is also a great blitzer.

GMENHQ Overall Ranking: 76th Overall Ranking

Strengths:

  • Sideline to sideline speed: Dawson ran a 4.93 second 40 yard dash (there is a difference between football speed and 40 times and his football speed may be even better)
  • Read and instantly reacts kind of player
  • Great athletic ability (acceleration, change of direction etc.)
  • Plays with low pad level

Concerns:

  • Needs to bulk up
  • Not ideal build
  • Character concerns
  • Inconsistent tackling technique

Dawson is a good football player. He is an aggressive linebacker with off the chart abilities. This is the kind of linebacker that you could become overly enamored with a highlight reel. He flashes incredible talent and he makes some really impressive plays. Dawson needs to become better at the little things at the next level.

Dawson has 1st round talent with the polish of a 3rd rounder. I think he will end up being selected in the 2nd round because he is a flashy athlete. The Giants would be better off with a Eric Kendricks or a Denzel Perryman. Dawson is my 5th ranked linebacker.
