Phil McConkey: Captain America
Both Phil McConkey and Steve Rogers (a.k.a. Captain America) entered the military as frail men with big hearts and even bigger dreams. While Captain America achieved greatness through a medical experiment that freakishly altered his physique, McConkey was signed by the Giants as a rail-thin 27-year-old rookie after serving four years in the Navy. McConkey’s positive attitude and mental toughness enabled him to survive six seasons in the NFL, highlighted by a touchdown catch and victory in Super Bowl XXI. After the game, McConkey displayed his heroic alertness and patriotism by retrieving a gun that a police officer had lost on the field during a struggle with a fan.
