2. Torrey Smith Goes To Division Rival
If you can’t beat the Ravens, take their free agents; this has been the Browns unofficial mantra for years. The Browns have signed a handful of former Ravens including cornerback Gary Baxter (2005) and outside linebacker Paul Kruger (2013). Signing Smith would be the one that simply would hurt the Ravens faithful.
Smith is a good receiver but he wants more than the Ravens are willing to pay. He already turned down one contract offer from the Ravens. Many people thought the Ravens offer was actually too generous, it would have paid him about $7 million per season. The Ravens don’t want to lose Smith but have a lot of young talent at the receiver position and several other needs.
The Ravens money is tight and they want to be aggressive in free agency. They are desperate to restructure the contracts of Haloti Ngata and Lardarius Webb. The Browns need a receiver badly after Josh Gordon got himself suspended for another season. The Browns are all to familiar with Smith and will pay him what the Ravens will not.
