New York Giants: Tom Coughlin Extension Simply Symbolic

facebooktwitterreddit

According to reports the New York Giants extended the contract of their head coach, Tom Coughlin through 2016. This came to the surprise of nobody.

It was just a matter of time. This is nothing more than a symbolic move, a good will gesture to a coach that has won two Super Bowls.

A classic ACDC song reminds us that money talks. That is certainly true for you or me but in the NFL everybody has money. In the NFL, Super Bowl victories are what really talks. Coughlin has won two, and they speak volumes.

The Giants want the focus to be on the fact that they have won before with Coughlin as the head coach. It suggests that they can win again and it is a nicer thing to cling to than back to back losing seasons.

This decision was not reached because the Giants are sure they want the future Coughlin can provide. This was decided so that Coughlin did not have to go into the season, with thoughts about this being the end in the back of his mind.

This was decided because if the Giants do turn it around and win under Coughlin, the story turns right back into a glorious one and they don’t have to get rid of the beloved coach.

This is symbolic. The organization can’t admit that they are unsure. They can’t make it be known that another losing season is a possibility that leaves them restless. They have to show that they fully support the coach, so the players will too. In a profession guarded by coach-speak that gives reporters nothing to go on, this is the front office’s version of coach-speak.

The simple truth is that Coughlin cannot survive another season like the last one. If he leads the Giants into the iceberg of defeat, the Giants organization will fire him in the nicest way possible. They may not throw him off the boat, but they will ask him to stop steering it as they try to keep the franchise afloat.

Super Bowl championships talk, but the volume is lowered by the sting of losing. Another losing season, and the championships will be squealing on mute. The Giants bet on a happy ending, now we can only hope they get it.
