5. Are The Eagles Gunning For Mariota?

I have little doubt that Chip Kelly wants Mariota as his franchise quarterback. I do however have much doubt that his Eagles will pull the trigger on a massive trade to be able to draft Mariota. Here is why:

The Eagles have the 20th pick in the 1st round. The Eagles would have to trade up to the second pick to lock up Mariota. That is a lot to give away for any player. The Eagles would have a hard time pulling off that deal, and if they accomplished it they may regret the cost.

I think the Eagles want you to think that they want Mariota. As long as people are talking about Kelly reuniting with the Oregon Ducks quarterback, nobody is talking about the other possibilities. Teams love to keep their real intentions quietly hidden. The hype about trading up makes me believe it less.

We have learned not to count anything out with Kelly and his Eagles. We won’t believe he won’t trade up until Mariota is drafted by another team. Even then it would surprise nobody if the Eagles try to get him. The truth though is it is a lot less realistic than the masses think.
