2015 NFL Draft: Giants Needed To Pick Landon Collins

With the first day of the 2015 NFL Draft out the window, the New York Giants were first to go in the second day. As they were sitting with the 40th pick, the Giants felt the needed to pick first in the second round and traded up for it. They gave away their fourth and seventh round picks to the Tennessee Titans for the 33rd pick. When the Giants saw that Alabama’s safety Landon Collins was still on the board, they pulled the trigger. The Giants had the feeling that he would go away before the 40th pick and even some are surprised that he didn’t go in the first.

It was pretty obvious who the Giants were going to pick when the trade was announced. They virtually have no one at the safety position after longtime veteran safety Antrel Rolle landed where the draft is currently taking place, in Chicago. After realizing that obtaining a safety through free agency was unrealistic, their last real shot was the draft.

Landing Collins was a necessity for the Giants as he could turn into another Rolle with his size and speed. The junior shows outstanding footwork and intensity when going for the tackle. It may be too early to say that Collins landed the starting role, but he definitely has an edge over Cooper Taylor and Nat Berhe.

While some believe that Collins wasn’t the best pick for the Giants, it was the necessary pick. When you have a gap in your team, especially a critical one like the safety position, you have to make those picks.

Just like yesterday, the Giants used their first pick on the offensive lineman Ereck Flowers and if Brandon Sherff wasn’t picked up by the Washington Redskins, then he’d be wearing blue right now. The Giants had to fix their offensive line and they did the same at the safety position.

So while you’re thinking the Giants could have done better, just sit back and think about it for a second. The Gmen are filling in the gaps and trying to make it work, so as of now, let them do what they have to do.
