2. New York Jets Trade Up For QB Bryce Petty
This has to be one of the most impactful trades in the draft. There were rumors of the Jets moving up to draft Marcus Mariota, which would have been a horrible move. Mariota would have made a bad match for this Jets squad. Drafting Petty puts them in a much better direction.
The Jets traded up one spot with the Jaguars in order to draft Petty. Now some would say, why trade up a spot? This was actually very sly on the Jets part. The Jets knew that the Cleveland Browns were in the running for Petty as well and they beat them right to it. It was a very clutch move by the Jets.
Petty won’t start right out of the gate, but he could be developed into one heck of a quarterback. He has ridiculous arm strength. Whenever he starts I’m sure Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker are going to love the way he throws the ball to them. Another important quality is the fact that he is a leader. He has a lot of charisma and can rally the troops into action.
The trade:
The Jets shipped off a fourth round pick (104) and a seventh round pick (229)
The Jets received a fourth round pick (103) and drafted Petty
Petty definitely has the ability to be a starter one day. He has the makings of a franchise quarterback in my eyes, but that all won’t come to him in one day. He needs time to be groomed into it. The Jets may have finally landed their first real leader since Joe Namath.
