2015 New York Giants: LB’s Will Be A Strength

Every franchise has a position or style that defines their franchise. Some organizations are notorious for having great defensive units, while others may have a history of great quarterback play. If the New York Giants had to be defined by one term it would be: Great linebacker play.

From Sam Huff to Harry Carson to Lawrence Taylor to Jessie Armstead, this organization is loaded with rich history at the linebacker position. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case of late.

Jerry Reese and company have missed on a countless number of players at the position in the draft, and really since Antonio Pierce‘s departure they haven’t had a consistent signal caller at the position. After this offseason though, things seem to be looking up.

When Jon Beason was traded mid-season to New York from Carolina in 2013 it was a surprise too many considering Jerry Reese just doesn’t roll like that. Quickly, Beason was a difference maker for Big Blue and was rewarded with a new contract last offseason.

Although, he only played in 4 games due to injury in 2014, Beason still brings leadership, ability and a swagger that could really change the landscape of this defense. His play has never been questioned, it’s his health that’s halted his progress.

Devon Kennard as a rookie made an outstanding impression on Giants brass. Recording 4.5 sacks, 45 tackles, and 2 forced fumbles in the 12 games he played in. The size, youth, and ability is there for him to a major contributor on this defense for years to come. He was yet another high character pick in their 2014 draft class that made a big splash in their rookie season.

The 3rd linebacker that rounds out this group is newly acquired free agent, J.T. Thomas. Thomas, played with Jacksonville last year and recorded 84 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions in only 10 starts. His versatility is off the charts, which is perfect for the type of defense that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo runs.

The rest of the linebacking group is deep enough to have their effect both on special teams and as injury depth. Having a guy like Jameel Mcclain is crucial behind Beason just incase of injury because of Mcclain’s ability to be in the middle of defense as a signal caller.

Both Jonathan Casillas and Mark Herzlich are excellent special teams players and fit the perfect role of adding depth behind the starters. Their roles will be crucial, and fly completely under the radar as the season goes along.

Overall, this group has a ton of potential heading into 2015. Youth, experience, and production create a group that could be one of the bigger strengths of the team. When’s the last time you’ve heard that out of the Giants linebackers? This group is much different and ready to make a big impact this upcoming season. I can feel it.
