Super Bowl XXV 1990

The lasting image of Super Bowl XXV is Scott Norwood, the infamous kicker of the Buffalo Bills missing the potential game winning field goal. The Giants had to get to the Super Bowl the hard way and it is only fitting that a nail biting win ended their season. In week 14 of the 1990 season, Simms was injured. The Giants would go on to make a historic playoff run with their backup quarterback Jeff Hostletler. It wasn’t how coach Parcells drew it up, but it made the Super Bowl that much more amazing.

Hostettler did enough to win what was very much a defensive slugfest. Hostettler threw for 221 yards and a touchdown in the Super Bowl. The Giants legendary defense slowed down the equally legendary Jim Kelly just enough to win the Lombardi trophy. Kelly could only muster 212 yards in the game and he was held out of the end zone. The Bills two touchdowns were scored on the ground.

The Giants trailed 12-9 going into halftime. It was clear that both teams were equals, but there could only be one champion. The Giants won a gritty 20-19 game and much credit has to go to their defense. Lawrence Taylor and Pepper Johnson were one of the most exciting pass rushing tandems in the history of football.

The New York Giants did just enough to beat the Bills in a Super Bowl for the ages. The Bills went on to lose in the Super Bowl three more consecutive times. That team in 1990 is widely considered the greatest team to not win it all. The Giants did battle with an all time great team that had six future hall of famers and they came out victorious.
