3. The Defensive Secondary:

Piggy-backing off of the last point, the Giants inexperience is especially concerning in the defensive secondary. The Giants still have to decide who will be the free safety. That is a battle that will be fascinating to watch in training camp and in the preseason games. The Giants know that Landon Collins can learn to play the strong safety position, yet there are concerns that he could be a liability in his rookie season.

The Giants cornerback situation is also mildly concerning. Prince Amukamara is proving to be a great player, yet his injury history is worrisome. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is serviceable but his best football is likely behind him. The real concern though is the nickel cornerback position. Chykie Brown is not a viable option to me. He was released from a Baltimore Ravens team that ran out of healthy cornerbacks because he is a PI penalty waiting to happen. The job should be Trumaine McBride’s job to lose. Cooper Taylor may also fill this role.

All it takes is one problem and the secondary could be the thing that holds this team back. If the free safety position is a train wreck, the Giants will give up big plays down the field. If Collins struggles defenses will pick on him relentlessly. If one of the two starting cornerbacks gets hurt, the Giants are in serious trouble. It may be great but there are no guarantees in this secondary unit.
