Shane Vereen – RB

Vereen is such a nice fit for McAdoo’s system. A quick scat-type back with solid hands and some red zone chops, he’s a very useful gadget player for this offense.

I worry about his fantasy value though. Gadget running backs can be very effective–we saw that with Derrick Ward in 2007. And Darren Sproles has been a PPR king for years now. But then, there are the gadget’s fantasy owners bite at who never pan out (Dexter McCluster anyone?).

I think a lot of people have high expectations for Vereen since he’s expected to be a key contributor to the offense, and he has the talent to be. But he still has to prove he can put up big time stats. The potential for 70-80 catches is there, so he’s certainly worth a look in the early to mid-rounds of your drafts. But keep a close eye on him in the preseason to make sure you see him fitting into the offense in more of a Sproles role than a McCluster.
