Beason is a little like Collins in the sense that the Giants are so thin at this position they can’t afford to lose their top player. In the case of linebacker, it’s Beason. The Giants are taking a real chance throwing out Devon Kennard and JT Thomas at outside linebacker, so they’ll need a linebacker with some experience manning the middle. And behind Beason, there’s not much depth either. He’s the most experienced and most talented linebacker on the roster, and they need him to carry that unit.
Beyond the team’s thinness at linebacker, Beason’s just so important to this defense. He’s one of the captains, he’s the play-caller, and he’s an anchor in the middle of the field. Remember: his presence led to a big defensive rebound when he was acquired from the Panthers in October 2013. Losing him on the field would be a real killer.
