8. The Giants found Two Defensive Stars

There were few good things to say about the defense last season but Johnathan Hankins and Devon Kennard were certainly two bright spots for the team. Hankins really took the next step this past season. Hankins was the Giants second round draft selection in 2013. This past season he had seven sacks from the defensive tackle position. It is clear that he has an explosive ability that offensive linemen hate going against.

The other bright spot was rookie linebacker out of USC, Devon Kennard. Kennard had some growing pains in his rookie campaign but he showed freakish athletic ability and is able to defend the run and the pass. Kennard has a very bright future ahead of him. If there is a player that the Giants can rebuild the defense around it might just be Kennard.

Kennard had 43 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles last season. With new defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo at the helm Kennard could be used very creatively. The Giants may use Kennard more as a blitzing linebacker to take advantage of his raw athletic ability.

The Giants defense doesn’t look like it will be a dominant unit in the 2015 season. That being said there is reason for optimism about the defense moving forward. Hankins and Kennard could be stars for years to come.
