It Would be More Cost Effective to Sign Eli to a Big Deal now, Rather then wait it out

There are rumors that Eli Manning wants to be the highest paid player in the NFL. If  the Giants choose to pay him to that extent they will actually save money. Manning  is set to make $17 Million in 2015. If he goes unsigned until next season the Giants will be forced to franchise tag him. There is no way they let him hit the free agent market, where a quarterback of his caliber would receive offers from probably 20+ teams. How many franchises would pay up for a 2 time Super Bowl MVP who doesn’t get hurt and has been nothing but a model citizen off the field? A LOT.

If and when they franchise tag him it will cost the Giants just shy of $24 million for the 2016 season. If they decide to tag him the following year (2017) as well it will be close to a $26 million dollar deal.

By signing him now the Giants can give him the $22+ million he is looking for, that would put him atop the NFL pay scale. This would also save money over the next 2 seasons and beyond against the franchise tag. It would also lock up an all-time great quarterback for the remainder of his career. Not a bad move.
