Donnell’s another player I like, but there’s also a considerable amount of uncertainty
surrounding his game. He really struggled with blocking last year, and slowed down in the second half of the season as defenses started to pay more attention to him. The Giants raved about him early in the offseason, and he’s been recovering from an achilles injury he sustained a little after his hot start. And I think both factors have led to him being listed as number two on the team’s official depth chart early on.
Now, he needs to prove two things: he’s healthy, and that his hot start last year was not a fluke.
And he needs to start to prove these right now because the uncertainty that surrounds Donnell’s game is also reflected in the Giants’ tight end depth. Along with Donnell, they Giants have just Daniel Fells and Adrien Robinson who would likely make the team. Fells is a good blocker and decent red zone threat, and Robinson has proved very little in his time in New York. They need Donnell to prove he can be a consistent receiver this season.
