The Denver Broncos spent a lot of money on defense this year and it has paid off in the form of an appearance in Super Bowl 50. Unfortunately for John Elway, he will have to say goodbye to a few of their starters on D in the offseason. He certainly hopes to send them away as Super Bowl Champions.

The Broncos have a few free agents with which Jerry Reese would love to bolster the Giants’ last-place defense. The Broncos will no doubt be forced to be superstar linebacker Von Miller to keep him off the open market. Two other Broncos linebackers, Danny Trevathan and Brandon Marshall, will be heading to free agency and Denver will likely retain Marshall as a restricted free agent. Certainly Reese should make a play at Trevathan.

Trevathan was the Broncos’ leading tackler in the regular season and the postseason. Sound tackling is something in short supply on the Giants linebacking corps and Trevathan would help shore up a patchwork group.

Denver has a similar situation to deal with on their defensive line. Last month, the Broncos recently gave defensive end Derek Wolfe a four-year extension worth $36.7 million. That could mean that Malik Jackson, who plays opposite Wolfe, will hit the free market. Jackson is coming off his best season as a pro, started all 16 games, and was graded at Pro Bowl level by Pro Football Focus.

As an added bonus, Jackson said this week that he has an interest in coming to New York. “It’d be cool,’’ Jackson said Wednesday. “Great market, great fans.

“If I did have an opportunity to go there, it would be cool to reunite with my boy Robert Ayers. I know Devon Kennard’s out there, too. If that was the case, it’d be dope. Hopefully me and the Broncos work something out, but if not, there’s definitely a chance that I’ll be looking for a new home. It’s a business, you got to do what you got to do.”

Both Trevathan and Jackson will be playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday, but it’s not likely that either will be back with the Broncos next season. If the Giants could land one or both of these free agents, their defense would be instantly improved.

Obviously, what complicates the equation is money. The Denver Post believes Trevathan will use the Eagles’ Mychal Kendricks as the benchmark for his deal. Kendricks signed a four-year, $29 million contract last August. Mile High Sports estimated that Jackson could be looking at a deal in the four-year, $36 million range.
