Even with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Prince Amukamara on the field, the New York Giants struggled in coverage in 2015. Whether Amukamara returns or not, the Giants need better corner play, especially in the slot. Trevin Wade and Jayron Hosley were often exposed by opposing quarterbacks, either in the slot or on the outside filling in for injured starters.
Casey Hayward, 26, spent the last four years with the Green Bay Packers, an organization Ben McAdoo is certainly familiar with. Pro Football Focus rates him as the third-best corner available in free agency. Hayward was Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2012, but battled injuries in the seasons that followed. Green Bay would like to re-sign Hayward, but he himself said he’ll “probably hit the market.”
According to PFF, “He has earned above-average coverage grades in each of his four seasons, ranking 14th and 21st at the position the last two seasons. He has proven capable of playing on the outside… but he is still at his best when playing in the slot.”
Hayward’ not a replacement for Amukamara, but he’s a versatile corner that would be a significant upgrade over Hosley, McBride and Wade. Jerry Reese will need to address the outside corner situation, either with a top pick in the draft or another free agent.
The Giants will likely spend top dollar on a big name pass rusher, but signing Hayward could be a good value add for depth at corner… obviously, if the price is right.
