After the day one defensive spending spree, the New York Giants shored up their defensive line and added a top-tier cornerback to replace Prince Amukamara. Big money went to signing Olivier Vernon, Damon Harrison and Janoris Jenkins, but free agency didn’t end there. Jerry Reese signed inside linebacker Keenan Robinson to a one-year deal.

Robinson was ranked the 16th best free agent inside linebacker by WalterFootball.com and an athletic MLB who specializes in coverage. Chris Pflum of Big Blue View writes, “His 2015 campaign was an up and down one, which saw him flash his speed and athleticism in coverage and as a blitzer, but also proved inconsistent in run defense, missing 15 tackles in 2015.”

However, just like the Giants’ previous middle linebacker, Robinson is prone to injury. If Reese signed him to be the starter, that’s awfully risky business. The Giants may end up with Unga, J.T. Thomas or Devon Kennard as MLB and, as Jordan Raanan of NJ.com puts it, that would be a “disaster waiting to happen.”

As it stands now, that’s the case. The depth chart at middle linebacker has Robinson as the starter and Uani ‘Unga as the reserve. So where does Reese go from here? Is he content going into the 2016 season with that group manning the middle?

There are still viable options out there to sign as MLB including re-signing Jasper Brinkley. James Laurinaitis and DeMeco Ryans could be possible targets and would be an upgrade over Robinson. And then there’s the draft. Myles Jack or Reggie Ragland may be available at 10. Would they plug right in as the starting MLB? Obviously, every signing Reese makes can’t be a splashy one, but entering the season with Robinson as the starter can’t be the plan as the Giants drew it up.
