Vonn Bell To Visit With New York Giants; Could Be A Natural Fit

The New York Giants have yet to pick up a safety in free agency. Co-owner John Mara believes Nat Berhe, Bennett Jackson or Mykkele Thompson will end up starting in 2016. “I’d like that to be the plan. We felt good about all of them,” Mara said. “They all got hurt. I’d like one of them to step up and be the free safety, yes.” Nat Berhe has the early lead in that race.

New York could also use an upgrade over Trevin Wade at slot corner. Jackson will compete for that spot and the Giants have brought in free agent Jerraud Powers for a visit.

Vonn Bell is an intriguing prospect who could fill both those needs for the Giants. The Ohio State prospect has great ball skills, reads the field well and reacts quickly. He earned a national championship in 2014 with Urban Meyer. His six interceptions and 92 tackles got him 2015 second-team All-Big Ten honors from league coaches and first team from the media.

Bell started his freshman year as a slot corner with the Buckeyes and transitioned to safety in 2014. An AFC scout told NFL.com, “you can’t play him around the line of scrimmage, but he’s got instincts in coverage.” He seems like an ideal partner to Landon Collins who is best playing close to the line.
NFL Network’s Rand Getlin confirms that the Giants have interest and will bring in Bell for a workout. The Jets, Patriots and Panthers will also bring him in for a visit. Bell would be a fit for the Giants in the second round and possibly even the third. He could come in and compete with Berhe for the safety spot and with Wade for slot corner. Bell’s versatility could be an asset for the Giants and seems like a natural fit.
