The NFL 2016 regular season schedule is supposed to be unveiled today (April 14th), but Elliot Harrison of NFL.com has already named the New York Giants at Los Angeles Rams game as one of 2016’s top 16 must-see matchups.

Coming in at the very last spot on the list, here’s Elliot’s reasoning:

"“Our first game on the list is a fun international matchup, being played in London. The East Coast vs. West Coast thing is still alive and well on sports-talk radio, and for all the commenters who think us football writers are biased toward Eli Manning or “disrespect” (insert West Coast athlete here). This goes back to the days of Portland Trailblazers fans saying Clyde Drexler didn’t get enough respect, or that nobody cared about Air Coryell and the San Diego Super Chargers. With the Rams in Los Angeles again, it’s cool to have NFC teams in the two largest media markets facing off, especially with the game being played in another big global market.”"

Personally, I’m not looking forward to this game for two simple facts: 1) It’s in London and the last time the Giants played there against the Miami Dolphins in 2007, it was ugly and boring (but a win). 2) The Giants historically stink against the Los Angeles Rams.

  • However, if you buy into Harrison’s take, you can add three more story angles to the intrigue:

    1) The #1 overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft (Eli Manning) calling plays in one huddle as the #1 overall pick of this year’s draft calls plays in the other. Huh? Yup, the Tennessee Titans have traded their first round pick along with a couple others to the Los Angeles Rams, who despite recent reports that they believe Case Keenum is their starting quarterback, would most likely select either Jared Goff out of California or Carson Wentz out of North Dakota State.

    2) One of the Giants big free agent acquisitions, cornerback Janoris Jenkins, will be facing his former team. I predict a pick-six for the JackRabbit.

    3) The Giants passed on drafting Todd Gurley in the 2015 NFL Draft, opting to pick Ereck Flowers instead. That decision was considered one of the worst moves of last season.

Can this Giants-Rams quasi-rivalry get back to its rowdy roots? To the games of 2001-2002, when Kerry Collins, Tiki Barber, Jessie Armstead, and Michael Strahan would clash with Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk and the Greatest Show on Turf? Or to the games from 1984-1990 when Phil Simms and Lawrence Taylor butted heads with Jack Youngblood, Eric Dickerson, Jim Everett, and Flipper Anderson. For the NFL’s sake, we hope so.
