5. Joe Morrison, Cincinnati Bearcats (1959)

Games: 184
Approximate Value: 75
Average AV Per Season: 7

The Giants selected Cincinnati Bearcats running back / receiver Joe Morrison 34th overall in the 1959 NFL Draft, ahead of USC D-lineman Monte Clark to the San Francisco 49ers, Texas A&M end John Tracey to the Los Angeles Rams, and linebacker Dave Lloyd to the Cleveland Browns. Among Cincy alumni, Joe Morrison was the most tenured NFL players with 14 seasons under his belt, of which came with Big Blue. His career AV of 60 is second only to edge rusher Trent Cole among former Bearcats.

In those 14 seasons with the G-Men, he played in 184 games. In 1963, his 4.8 rushing yards per attempted were 5th best in the NFL while his 10 touchdowns were sixth highest league-wide. The following year, in 1964, his 8.1 yards per touch was 6th highest in the NFL. Two years later, in 1966, Morrison enjoyed the second best season of his career. His six receiving touchdowns ranked 10th in the league and his 8.8 yards per touch was third highest of all. Morrison’s best season was in 1969 when his 11 touchdowns were third highest, his 1,034 yards from scrimmage ranked 10th most, and his 6.8 yards per touch were 4th best.

Morrison’s 2,474 rushing yards put him 13th on the all-time Giants rushing leaders list right behind Rob Carpenter and just ahead of Mel Triplett. Joe is 4th on the all-time Giants receiving leaders in yards, falling just seven yard short of 5,000 for his career and sandwiched between Tiki Barber and Homer Jones. Morrison’s 47 career receiving touchdowns places him 3rd in Giants history behind Kyle Rote and ahead of Frank Gifford. His 395 career receptions also put him 3rd in franchise lore, behind Tiki and ahead of Jeremy Shockey.

Morrison’s 65 total touchdowns and 390 points was third most in franchise history behind Gifford and Barber.

In terms of career approximate value, Morrison is 16th among all Giants. Only Eli Manning has played in more games among Giants offensive players in franchise history.
