Drafted by the New York Giants in the 4th round (124th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft, a handful of picks after the Denver Broncos picked Central Florida wide receiver Brandon Marshall and the Cincinnati Bengals selected Michigan State defensive tackle Domata Peko, but before the Broncos got Louisville pass rusher Elvis Dumervil.

At Northwestern, Cofield was second-team All-Big Ten his senior season in 2005. He finished with 197 tackles (88 solo), 6.5 sacks, and 15.5 stops for losses and registered 18 quarterback pressures with 8 pass deflections and a 16-yard interception return. He also recovered 3 fumbles and forced 4 others.

In six seasons with the G-Men, Barry started 78 of 82 games played, knocking down 12 passes, forcing three fumbles (recovering one), and notching 10.5 sacks, plus 210 combined tackles. From 2006 – 2010, Cofield only missed 2 starts.
