#1. DB Erich Barnes – Week 9 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Sunday, November 12th, 1961

NOTE: I couldn’t find any videos or imagery of Barnes, so hopefully you’ll enjoy highlights from the Giants win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in December 1963. In a game the Giants won 38-21 at Yankee Stadium, defensive back Erich Barnes caught a 62-yard touchdown pass from Y.A. Tittle. With that score, the G-Men went up 24-7 in the second quarter. Y.A. would end up 18-24 for 307 yards and 3 touchdowns to push the Giants record to 7-2.

A tie in the regular season finale would give the Giants the NFL East title thanks to a 10-3-1 record while Philly finished 10-4. The Green Bay Packers – NFL West Champions – would blow out the Giants in the NFL Championship Game 37-0.

Barnes played four seasons for Big Blue from 1961-1964. During that time, Erich had 18 interceptions, returning three for touchdowns. His 195 interception return yards and 102 yard interception return led the league in ’61. He would be a Pro Bowler and First Team All-Pro that season and would make the Pro Bowl each of the next three years with the Giants.
