According to NFL.com and multiple reports, Leon Hall, a former first-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals, has been signed to a one year contract worth up to $2 million by the New York Giants.  His signing coincides with the release of cornerback Tramain Jacobs. With Hall, the Giants have now added three starting caliber cornerbacks this off-season, clearly addressing what they feel is the weakest part of the defense.  Anyone watching the past two season can attest that the pass defense has been susceptible, at best, and atrocious at worst.  This signing helps to solidify a rocky part of the roster that now looks like it could become a strength in 2016.

  • Giants’ management, general manager Jerry Reese and head coach Ben McAdoo, have expressed confidence in the 31-year old cornerback.

From Giants.com: “Leon is one of the versatile veteran corners that we had targeted during the free agency period. He was very impressive at the workout Wednesday, he brings tons of experience, and also brings veteran leadership to our defense.” Jerry Reese and Giants’ management obviously view Leon Hall as a competent, viable part of the defense in 2016.

McAdoo also made a point to mention Hall’s versatility. “We see him playing a lot of inside football for us, serving as a nickel. But never say never when a guy has a chance to move around.” The ability to play multiple positions played a part in Hall’s signing, and for a one year, relatively inexpensive contract, the Giants clearly made a financially sound decision in addition to a smart football move.

Last season, Hall started only four games, a career low, but still managed two interceptions, one return touchdown and eight passes defensed.  He has had a history of injuries, including two Achilles tendon injuries and back surgery this off-season that was said to be reason for the extended evaluation period. This would be disconcerting if the Giants were looking to Hall to start 10 plus games, but with two proven starters, a top-10 pick and a solid slot corner already on the roster, Hall’s signing merely adds depth to what is becoming a respectable unit.  Even Hall noticed the talent on the Giants roster, and went with a “gut instinct” when signing with the Giants.  Per The New York Post, “Talent is definitely there. I know that they expect better, and I think that they will be better.” And continuing, “…I felt good about where this team is going.”

Right now it is hard to argue with signing Hall, as the influx of talent almost feels as if the Giants need to be good this year.  The talent that was sorely lacking last year has been infused into the team and its core, and value players already been on the roster have become more comfortable in the system.

Most successful teams have a tenuous balance of continuity and fresh faces.  Leon Hall is the latest and possibly the last significant name to be added to the Giants roster this preseason, but judging from the player’s own words, there certainly appears to be lofty expectations for the New York Giants this season.
