The New York Giants are embracing the need to build for the future by meeting with quarterback prospects at the 2017 NFL Draft.

The New York Giants are approaching a turning point in the decorated history of the organization. Starting quarterback and franchise cornerstone Eli Manning is closer to the end of his career than most fans are willing to admit, and New York doesn’t yet have a replacement lined up.

With Manning now age 36, the search for his heir apparent has officially begun—and the options are beginning to surface with regularity.

The 2017 NFL Draft doesn’t have the strongest crop of talent at quarterback, but that may work in New York’s favor. Jerry Reese can utilize a mid or late-round pick to find a quarterback instead of having to invest a first-round selection in a player who will sit for at least one season behind Manning.

According to James Kratch of NJ.com, the Giants put the wheels in motion by meeting with three quarterbacks at the 2017 NFL Draft Combine: Jerod Evans, Patrick Mahomes, and Seth Russell.

Manning is the most durable player in the NFL, but New York is doing right by its fans to evaluate the quarterbacks of the future.

Manning is 13 seasons, 201 regular season games, and 12 postseason games into his NFL career. Thus, while he may be Mr. Reliable, the 36-year-old has also taken a great deal of punishment during his lengthy tenure with the Giants.

No quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft appears ready to replace Manning as the starting quarterback as soon as 2017. There are, however, a number of intriguing players who could become his heir apparent.

It’s up to general manager Jerry Reese to determine who the best possible fits would be.
