3. Continuity

The New York Giants entered the 2017 offseason with an unfavorable reality setting in. Not only did New York need to improve in certain areas of the game, but it was in line to lose a number of critical contributors who were on the roster in 2016.

By re-signing Jason Pierre-Paul, the Giants created something that simply cannot be overvalued: continuity on defense.

New York’s defense finished the 2016 NFL regular season ranked No. 2 in points allowed per game. It did so by combining a ferocious defensive line with an elite secondary, thus accounting for the need to defend both the pass and the run.

Pierre-Paul may have missed four games during the 2016 regular season, but losing him entirely would have required the Giants to retool the defense.

Pierre-Paul returning means New York could soften the blow of potentially losing Johnathan Hankins. The 24-year-old free agent could leave the Giants, especially if his price tag proves to be out of Reese’s cap-limited capabilities.

Whether or not Hankins re-signs, getting Pierre-Paul back means New York will avoid losing two key cogs along the defensive line.
