New York Giants: Is Eli Manning Worthy Of The Hall of Fame?
5. Does Eli Make the Cut?
So far, we have some big “yays” and “nays.” His regular season play is spotty, at best, and largely average, while his play under pressure and in the postseason places him amongst the greatest quarterbacks in history.
What it comes down to is the age-old question: stats or rings?
There are players who have both: Tom Brady, Joe Montana, and so forth. There are players who just have the regular season stats, but no rings, such as Jim Kelly, Dan Marino, Fran Tarkenton, and Matt Ryan.
Then, there’s Manning, who is the only quarterback who has two Super Bowl MVPs and mediocre regular season stats.
If Manning were to retire today and never play another down of football, I would vote no on his Hall of Fame bid. This was hard for me to decide, especially because I’m admittedly biased. In the end, I couldn’t justify putting Manning there just because of his playoff success.
There’s nothing that he has done during the regular season that makes me go: “Yeah, Eli Manning belongs here.” Most of the time, I find myself saying, “How did this guy win us two Super Bowls?”
Don’t get me wrong; I like Eli Manning. I think he’s an above-average quarterback and I really want him to be a Hall of Famer. I just don’t think he has it right now. However, give the Giants one more ring, and there isn’t anyone in the world who wouldn’t vote Eli Manning into the Hall of Fame.
