Con: Raw Technique

Malik McDowell is one of the prototypical defensive lineman with the potential for greatness, but the flawed technique to create persisting issues. Although the upside is undeniably intriguing, the immediate value is somewhat polarizing.

If the New York Giants were to draft Malik McDowell, then they must understand that the long-term value may outweigh the short-term benefits.

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com stated that McDowell’s, “Technique and footwork are a mess,” which has been corroborated by a number of analysts. His balance can be thrown off too easily for him to be a consistent pass rusher.

Knowing that to be true, it’s fair to believe that McDowell will struggle to live up to his All-Pro potential when offsetting his strengths is such a manageable task.

The 20-year-old defensive tackle is close to unstoppable when he gets the first step on an offensive lineman. Unfortunately, he’s quite limited when the topic of conversation is going up against elite linemen and overcoming elite blocking.

McDowell is going to need to be coached up, but he has the undeniable potential to become one of the best players in this draft class.
