4. Sense Of Urgency

The decision to select a playmaking tight end at No. 23 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft is all the proof you need that Jerry Reese is working with a sense of urgency. The New York Giants are close enough to a championship that a move like this could put them over the top.

Whether or not it does, the Giants are a balanced offense away from being a true contender, and getting a standout performer at tight end should help them do so.

New York ranked No. 2 in the NFL in points allowed per game during the 2016 season, yet it still failed to win the NFC East. That could be chalked up to a strong NFL, but it could also be regarded as a product of New York’s offensive inefficiency.

New York finished the 2016 season at No. 25 in total yards per game and No. 26 in points per game, which nearly counteracted the defense’s greatness.

Rather than waiting until the later rounds to find a cure to the offensive woes, Jerry Reese struck early with Evan Engram. He acknowledged the need to be able to not only make the big play, but move the chains on a consistent basis.

By drafting Engram, the Giants displayed a sense of urgency to build the offense up to the point of being of equal effectiveness to the defense.
