Jerry Reese has made his third selection of the 2017 NFL Draft. The newest member of the New York Giants is former California star Davis Webb.

Jerry Reese and the New York Giants have provided fans with no shortage of reasons to be surprised by the results of the 2017 NFL Draft. In what was received as a stunning decision, Reese selected former Ole Miss Rebels tight end Evan Engram at No. 23 overall.

With the 55th overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft, Reese stayed within the SEC and chose former Alabama Crimson Tide defensive tackle Dalvin Thompson. Both moves simultaneously addressed needs and expressed a sense of urgency.

In the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Giants utilized the No. 87 overall selection to make Davis Webb the newest member of Big Blue.

Webb is a quarterback who played three seasons for the Texas Tech Red Raiders and one season for the California Golden Bears, appearing in 35 games.

During his four-year career, Webb recorded 9,852 passing yards, 83 passing touchdowns, and 34 interceptions. In 2016, he threw for 4,295 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

Reese appears optimistic that Webb can be the heir apparent to aging quarterback Eli Manning. The incoming rookie will work behind the two-time Super Bowl champion in an attempt to learn and develop into the future face of the franchise.

That’s a tall task, to say the least.

New York has a solid history of utilizing its Day 2 selections to improve the quality of the roster. It found Sterling Shepard in Round 2 and Darian Thompson in Round 3 in 2016, took Landon Collins in Round 2 of the 2015 NFL Draft, and found Weston Richburg in Round 2 in 2014.

If everything goes according to plan, Webb could be a steal of a pick and thus continue
the tradition of Day 2 selections becoming prominent players in New York.
