The first-round of the 2017 NFL draft has come to an end, and the New York Giants came away with Ole Miss standout Evan Engram.

Well, we waited for months to discover the 23rd overall pick by the New York Giants, and Jerry Reese bamboozled us, again.

With O.J. Howard, Jarrad Davis and Garett Bolles being selected consecutively, the Giants were left floundering and dazed.

The obvious pick would have been David Njoku, but Reese decided to take a chance on the Ole Miss product instead.

Engram was projected to be an early second-round draft choice or late first-rounder. His versatility and dynamic play style must have been too appealing for Reese to pass up.

Personally, I was a bit disappointed at the selection. Engram is basically a glorified wide receiver. Despite his blazing speed (4.42 40-yard dash), he doesn’t offer much as a blocker. He’s a one trick pony.

Ben McAdoo will be pleased to see Brandon Marshall, Odell Beckham and Engram line up along side Eli Manning. It will surely open up the middle of the field and allow Engram to dominate the middle with his quick burst and refined route running.

Luckily, the addition of Rhett Ellison compliments Engram perfectly. When in two tight end sets, the Giant’s offense will be unpredictable and powerful.

Landon Collins’ Reaction

Landon Collins seems to think Engram is a special player and will contribute to the offense right off the bat. I’m hoping he’s right.

The thought of O.J. Howard joining Big Blue (superior blocker and tight end), still lingers in the back of my mind. Unfortunately, I wasn’t making the decisions last night in Philly.

Reese has never traded up in the first-round, so it was unlikely he’d be willing to part ways with a third or forth-round pick to welcome the Alabama star.

Logically, it makes sense. There are other holes to fill at linebacker, defensive tackle and running back. Holding on to every pick was essential to solving the remaining problems, but was passing up on Miami tight end David Njoku the right call?

Only time will tell.
