New York Giants: Five Reasons Eli Manning Should Have A Career-Year
4. Depth At Running Back
The running back position isn’t yet a strength for the New York Giants, but Eli Manning will have strength in numbers behind him. Head coach Ben McAdoo has named Paul Perkins as the starter and general manager Jerry Reese has complemented the former UCLA star with intriguing talent.
With a combination of Perkins, Shane Vereen, and Wayne Gallman, the Giants should have enough firepower at running back to ideally aid the passing attack.
In Week 17, Perkins got the nod at running back and became the first Giant to run for at least 100 yards in all of 2016. He ran for 226 yards on just 47 carries between Week 15 and Week 17, which translates to an average of 4.8 yards per carry.
Perkins will ned to prove he can handle the No. 1 duties, but Giants fans have been calling for him to receive an elevated role, and in 2017, he’ll receive that opportunity.
Behind Perkins will be a combination of dynamic playmakers in Gallman and Vereen. Vereen battled injuries in 2016, but recorded 59 receptions for 495 yards and four scores for the Giants in 2015, and has a Super Bowl championship on his resume.
With the fourth-round selection of Gallman and the acquisition of Shaun Draughn, Eli Manning will receive a much-needed dose of depth at running back in 2017.
