The New York Giants have been searching for consistent running back play since the injuries officially caught up with Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs. That long drought may not yet be over, but the hope is that a second-year player can step into the role of a No. 1 running back.
Perkins flashed star potential towards the end of the 2016 NFL season, and Eli Manning will have an opportunity to feed this workhorse on a more consistent basis in 2017.
Perkins finished the 2016 season with 456 rushing yards and 162 receiving yards on 127 total touches. A combined 618 yards from scrimmage is a respectable figure for a rookie who was underutilized for a vast majority of the season.
It was in Week 17 that Perkins truly emerged, recording the first and only 100-yard game by a Giants running back during the 2016 season.
Perkins has the power to work between the tackles and move the chains in short-yardage situations. He’s also a skilled pass-catcher who can add yet another element to what’s becoming the NFL’s best on-paper passing attack.
Paper rosters and on-field execution are two entirely different subjects, but Perkins adds to the appeal with his versatility at running back.
