New York Giants: Ranking the greatest quarterbacks in franchise history
4. Charlie Conerly
Charlie Conerly was the starting quarterback for most of the games that the New York Giants played between 1948 and 1961. During that time, he led New York to championship glory and produced in a manner that still ranks amongst the franchise legends.
Conerly’s tenure may stretch back to a time well before the modern era, but his achievements hold up against father time.
At the time he retired in 1961, Conerly ranked No. 1 in franchise history in passing yards and passing touchdowns. That isn’t entirely surprising, but what may catch some by surprise is how high he still ranks in franchise history.
Conerly still ranks No. 3 in franchise history in both passing yards and passing touchdowns, as well as No. 4 in career completions.
Conerly led New York to the 1956 NFL championship, and was named NFL MVP in 1959 by the Newspaper Enterprise Association. He was a three-time First-team All-Pro honoree, as well as a two-time Pro Bowler, and threw for 22 touchdowns during his rookie season in 1948.
Placing Conerly is admittedly difficult to do because of the era he played in, but he did as much during that time as just about any Giants quarterback in history.
