The Giants will need to think long and hard about taking Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick. It’s no secret that quarterback and offensive tackle are the team’s top needs this offseason, but it’s a rare opportunity to get a chance to land a game-changing playmaker like Barkley.

The Giants missed their opportunity to select Todd Gurley in the 2015 draft, and Los Angeles has since built their offensive line around the 2017 league MVP candidate. Of course, the Rams traded up in the following year’s draft to select Jared Goff No. 1 overall, but the moves have seemed to work out well for general manager Les Snead.

The Giants can always pass on the opportunity to select Barkley and hope they land a playmaker like the Saints and Chiefs did in Kamara and Hunt in the 2017 draft. But it’s also rare for an NFL franchise to have the chance to draft an almost sure-thing.

Both Kiper and Miller have Barkley listed as the No. 1 overall prospect regardless of position. The Nittany Lions 5-foot-11, 230-pound running back amassed 5,058 total yards and scored 51 touchdowns in three seasons in the Big Ten.

Barkley is the definition of a dual-threat running back and can make a mediocre offensive line look great. Gettleman has shown he has no problem taking a running back early, selecting Christian McCaffrey with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2017 draft.
